What’s beneath the surface is what counts!

Recently, I watched a documentary on YouTube based on the Indian society’s unfair beauty standards and it really spoke to me. It was well directed and portrayed the purani sooch of the people despite living in the 21st Century. I always felt that, although looks matter, they shouldn’t be the yard stick with which you judge someone. The society has brain washed us to judge a book by it’s cover or in this case, a person by their looks. I have encountered several people who think they are morden based on how they dress but what’s the point when your mindset isn’t. I’m not saying dressing up and looking good is bad, I’m saying that to judge a person based of their looks and how they dress up is bad. There are many songs, movies, podcasts, etc on inner beauty, which people listen to/watch and then preach about but never practice! What’s the point when inner beauty is just a term that exists in books!

I strongly believe in the quote beauty is skin deep and all that matters is the soul that resides beneath the surface. Judge a person by how smart, talented, good hearted they are, but NEVER EVER by how beautiful or ugly they are! There are several instances in my life where, knowingly or unknowingly, comments, made by others, based on external beauty have offended me!

When I was younger, I had taken swimming classes one summer! As a result of which I had gotten super tanned! A close friend of mine, unknowingly, commented in front of a group of friends that I became super dark. I felt offended but didn’t react. I know the fact that, she didn’t mean to offend me but when such sensitive topics are brought up and someone comments something negative about you, you will tend to fell hurt!

Plus, now when I think about this incident, I wonder how kids of that age would call someone dark or fair or beautiful or ugly, when it makes no sense at their age. How can such things even enter into the minds of kids unless, they hear their the elders of the house or people surrounding them speak about it! Now when someone, judge’s me by my looks or skin tone, instead of getting offended, I make an opinion about their regressive mindset. I now like to believe in the fact that, everyone is beautiful in their own way! Like Selena Gomez once sung, I’m no beauty queen, I’m just beautiful me!

In my opinion, we shouldn’t judge a person based on their beauty, skin tone, region, religion, race or ethnicity! Everyone is unique and beautiful! Am I right, or am I right?

Yours uniquely,

Sameeksha
